18–22 cm In br. plumage, most likely to be confused with Greater and Lesser sand plovers (p. 130), but differs from them in the black border to its chestnut breast-band. In non-br. plumage, differs in its overall slimmer appearance, longer legs, thinner and much weaker bill, complete brown breast-band and overall browner, less grey, coloration. HABITAT Most often seen in short-grassed areas, but also at estuaries. STATUS Boreal winter vagrant to the granitic islands of the Seychelles and to Farquhar. VOICE A clear ‘tooeet’ whistle. LC
